‘Working together … will require effective structures of co-ordination of the pastoral activities within parishes. Parish Pastoral Councils are at the service of mission and evangelisation. They are not debating societies or places for honorary membership. … We have to find the right path together, bishops, priests, religious and lay women and men. We have to launch out into the deep, even if it gets us at times out of our depth and even into deep water’
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Dublin
Training Officers
Effective meetings require effective officers and full participation by all members. Officers include presiders (usually the parish priest), chairpersons, and secretaries. Anyone who volunteers to take on a role as an officer, has rights and responsibilities.
- They have the right to the support of the group, to a clear job description and to initial and on-going training for their role.
- They have a responsibility to work in harmony with the group, to ensure the best possible meetings and development of the group.
The Diocese offers training and support for all officers (chairpersons, secretaries, and presiders). This training normally takes place, on request, at cluster level or at a central location (e.g. Newcastle West, Kilmallock, Adare or city centre).
